Library Music Guide

Frequently asked questions about library music

What is Library Music?

Library music (sometimes described as mood music) is music that has been specially written to act as background music to a music/media production. Some examples include TV adverts, computer games, audio guides, corporate videos.

What is the difference between Library Music and Royalty Free Music?

Music libraries pay the writers royalties when their music has been used. With royalty-free music, the rights to use that music are bought-out meaning that no further royalty payments would be required.

How long do Library Music Licences last for?

Generally, library music is licensed in perpetuity - ie. for the life of the particular production (as long as it is unchanged).

Where can I get free music samples from?

The music libraries are normally happy to send out samples of music to those who want them. See Library Music Contacts.
